Minerva perform Schubert + Ravel at SJSS

Maurice Ravel (arr. David Knotts) Scenes from ‘Daphnis and Chloe’

Franz Schubert Piano Trio No.1 in Bb major D898

Minerva+Piano+Trio tall.jpg

The Minerva Piano Trio returns to St John’s Smith Square with a programme featuring Schubert’s Trio in B-flat major and an arrangement of selected scenes from Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloe, which was commissioned and premiered during the Trio’s Young Artist residency at St John’s Smith Square in 2016/17.

Arranged by composer David Knotts, Scenes from Daphnis and Chloe include three movements from Ravel’s original orchestral score: Nocturne, Pantomime, Danse Guerrière. Ravel’s ballet was inspired by Greek writer Longus’ pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe from 2nd century AD.  The three selected movements in the new arrangement offer a thematic trajectory drawn from the actual novel about the discovery of love: innocence, awakening, touch, and passion.

Robert Schumann said of Schubert’s Piano Trio in B-flat major, D.898: “One glance at Schubert's Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.”  Written in 1827, this late large-scale work by Schubert, along with his monumental Piano Trio in E-flat, encompasses a full spectrum from unbridled joy to other-worldly lyricism.

Described as “an ensemble which is clearly going places”, “rich, thunderous and lyrical” (Classic FM), the Trio will be recording their debut album this season which will include their own commissions such as Scenes from Daphnis and Chloe featured in this programme.

NB. SJSS will be implementing a socially distanced and safe environment. Practical details will be forwarded to ticket holders prior to the event. Should circumstances prevent the concerts from going ahead then full refunds will be provided. DIGITAL VERSION AVAILABLE at www.sjss.org.uk from 29th October 2020

DANCE AND POETIC FANTASY - St. John’s Smith Square (Minerva Piano Trio)

DANCE AND POETIC FANTASY

Dance, poetry, and storytelling are inextricably linked in the Minerva Piano Trio’s second concert of the series at St John’s Smith Square, collaborating with the dance and art world in association with MusicArt London. With a newly commissioned piano trio transcription by David Knotts plus dance choreography, the Minerva Trio adapts Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe – the legendary Ballets Russes commission – for the concert stage. Inspired by the Greek epic poem by Longus that was set as a romance in late antiquity, Ravel saw the work as “a vast musical fresco…with faithfulness to the Greece of my dreams”. The new transcription with dance evokes its poetic essence, based on Ravel’s own selected scenes transcribed for solo piano and two shortened Orchestral Suites.
My Fleeting Angel by Cheryl Frances-Hoad is based on Sylvia Plath’s short story The Wishing Box about a husband and wife’s disparate dream worlds descending into a dark and macabre fantasy. The three-movement work is “at once so phantasmagorical and tightly structured, so assured in all its aspects and hinting so elegantly at a complex web of experience.” (Malcolm MacDonald). The piece won the Robert Helps Composition Prize in 2006.
Poetry and dance are woven into the fabric of Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor, which was written two years after the premiere of Daphnis and Chloe. The second movement is inspired by a complex Malaysian poetic form, known as the Pantoum, which requires a special pattern of alternating and combining distinct themes.
